28 July in Berlin

RIZ ORTOLANI CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF SOUNDTRACKS.
THE SUCCESS OF HIS MUSIC IN A WESTERN THAT HAS BEEN A BOX-OFFICE HIT IN GERMANY SINCE 1964.

A double gala event next 28 July at Berlin’s Hollywood Media Hotel for the 50 years of activity of Karl May Filme and its great producer, and for half a century of film soundtracks from Maestro Riz Ortolani, who in 1964 penned the score of “Old Shatterhand” (aka “Apaches Last Battle”) for the famous German movie studio. The film, an Italian/French/German coproduction by Artur Brauner and directed by Hugo Fregonese, starred Lex Barker, at a moment of excellent acting maturity with a string of about half a dozen Tarzan movies behind him, and is unanimously considered by critics and connoisseurs to be the “first European western”, still a major cult film and a masterpiece of the German movie industry. This is why it has never disappeared from cinema screens, and its soundtrack, recorded by Ortolani from 18 to 22 March 1964 precisely in Berlin with the Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir, remains as popular as ever. Ortolani is highly esteemed in Germany, and it was with great satisfaction that he accepted the invitation to attend the event, which demonstrates even after so many years the great affection and appreciation that producer Artur Brauner continues to hold for him. It was for Brauner that Ortolani also wrote in 1968 the soundtrack for the sumptuous two-part TV epic “The Last Roman” (“Kampf um Rom”), directed by Robert Siodmak and featuring Orson Welles and Richard Harvey. Ortolani, who in 1962 wrote the famous “More” soundtrack for the film “Mondo cane”, nominated for an Oscar award and the first of over 300 written, is currently working on the music for the six episodes of a new TV drama series by Pupi Avati, the director for whom Ortolani composed the background music for “A Second Childhood” in 2010.

Katyna Ranieri, the only foreign artist invited, sung it at the Oscar ceremony. Just one year later, the composer won the Golden Globe with Forget Domani (made successful by Frank Sinatra) from the movie La Rolls Royce Gialla [The Yellow Rolls Royce], also receiving the Golden Globe nomination for the Score. The second Oscar nomination arrived in 1971 with Till Love Touches Your Life, made a success by Shirley Bassey. More, was recorded over a thousand times by the greatest artists in the world (Frank Sinatra, Aretha Frankin, Nat King Cole, Andrea Bocelli) and boasts over 70 million records sold. In 2007, Ortolani received the Special Citation of Achievement for 7 million BMI Radio Broadcasts in the USA. 50 years of More

That incredible song “More” form 1962, perhaps the most performed in the history of cinematographic music and that Grammy Award of 1964, with 24 years going by before another Italian won the award; now a milestone to highlight the start of a bright career road for the composer, travelled by the Pesara born maestro Riz Ortolani. A road that, measured by those long ago milestones, has lasted fifty years and is paved with about 400 works that span from cinema to theatre, to symphony and even to contemporary theatre works. Most of all, a road that maestro Ortolani and his compositions have walked side by side and shared with the greatest, most legendary and prestigious names in music and world cinema during this long period that spans from 1900 to 2000. There are about 500 hours of music blessed by innumerable international and world recognition, a small treasure trove accumulated by the maestro Ortolani in half a century of creative activity. Today they are fused and distilled into a bright diamond that extracts all those treasures to create a sum total of 16 hours: a series of 16 CD’s and 2 Dvd’s, which these first four unforgettable CD’s are part of and which begin to light the magic of the notes, the allure of the images invoked by them and the never quite dormant emotions of the immortal voices that created exceptional interpretations of maestro Ortolani’s melodies. Unbridled Youth [Sconfinata Giovinezza]

The happy partnership with Pupi Avati, now spanning multiple decades, surfaces once again in “Unbridled Youth” [Sconfinata Giovinezza], the drama about a two dimensional mind, where the stream of memories tainted by nostalgic memories unravels and touches the heart, while at the same time merging with the stream of memories broken by Alzheimer. “The storyline of this movie is deeply felt because it can happen to anyone”, states Ortolani, “And given that it’s the delicate and heartfelt story of such an explicit drama, it wasn’t necessary to overly emphasize.

For this reason, the musical commentary limits itself to modestly highlight the characters feelings”.

The work method was the same as it has always been. Avati and Ortolani share a common musical world and have the same taste. “Therefore”, explains the Maestro, “even this time it was easy to agree on what to do, both in terms of the overall movie, and for the individual scenes, to decide when the orchestra should come in and in what way”.

Directed by: Pupi Avati
Actors: Fabrizio Bentivoglio, Francesca Neri, Serena Grandi, Gianni Cavina, Lino Capolicchio, Manuela Morabito, Erika Blanc, Vincenzo Crocitti, Osvaldo Ruggieri, Brian Fenzi, Marcello Caroli, Riccardo Lucchese, Lucia Gruppioni
